    Culture Note™

Black and red on a high top 1 is the founding image of this brand, and the '85 OG treatment is the version cut to the earliest proportions rather than the modern retro last. The story attached to it is usually told wrong. The NBA's uniform policy of the era required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike chose to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine and build advertising around the conflict rather than redesign anything. That campaign taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, a lesson every limited release since has traded on. Bred is what the lesson looks like in leather.
Bred is a hard colourway that punishes fussy styling. Recipe one: black straight leg jeans, a plain white heavyweight tee, and a black bomber or coach jacket, letting the red panels be the only colour anywhere. Recipe two: grey sweatpants cuffed at the ankle with a black hoodie, the most honest way this shoe has ever been worn. Black socks keep the line unbroken; white socks split the leg visually and shorten it. Hem should break just above the collar so the ankle panel shows. These are dry weather shoes, red leather stains permanently from road spray, and old pairs of any Jordan should be checked before hard wear because polyurethane midsoles degrade by hydrolysis over time.
The Banned advertising is the reason people who have never watched a game know this colourway. It gave the shoe an outlaw narrative that hip hop then carried forward, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers in their records, and Spike Lee directing the early Nike spots as Mars Blackmon. Bred pairs sit at the centre of the collecting culture that followed: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the market the shoe anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. There is also a documented darker side, with the shoes tied to robberies and school bans in the late 1980s.
Full leather upper in black and red with the '85 cut, which means a taller, narrower collar and a slimmer toe box than current retros, plus the winged ball logo of the earliest era on the ankle. Expect a snugger fit through the midfoot and a break in period that is genuinely stiff before the collar folds. Flat rubber cupsole underneath with the forefoot pivot circle, firm, low and direct, the ride of a shoe designed when court cushioning meant less than court feel. Red leather fades in strong sun and black leather shows dust, so store them out of window light, brush after wear, and lace fully while the panels are still setting to their final shape.
