Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 February 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Iced Lilac/White. Black Iced Purple pairs a blacked out upper with a cold, frosted violet, a combination that reads more like a late night colour grade than like team kit. The SE designation means the shoe gets treatment beyond a straight recolour, and on a Jordan 1 Low that usually shows up in the material mix and where the accent colour is allowed to sit. Under it is the shape Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, a shoe the company hoped might do 3 million dollars in three years and which sold out its first 50,000 pairs instead. Purple has no place in that founding story, which is exactly why it works now.
Utility
Black with a cold accent is the easiest palette to place. Recipe one: black jeans, a charcoal hoodie and a black overshirt, with the purple registering only when you step, which is the correct dose. Recipe two: dark grey trousers, a black knit and a leather jacket for an evening fit where the sneaker reads as intentional rather than casual by default. Black socks; purple socks would be a mistake. Low cut wants a hem that clears the collar. These are night and city shoes, comfortable for long walks, but keep them out of heavy rain because water marks on black leather dry pale and need conditioning to disappear.
Influence
The 1 belongs to hip hop's visual record as much as basketball's: 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all put Jordan and his sneakers into their music, and Nike's earliest advertising was directed by Spike Lee, who played Mars Blackmon in it. Jordan Brand's later music partnerships, with Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj, are the same relationship formalised. Dark, moody SE colourways like this one sit in that lineage, aimed at a buyer who wants the silhouette's weight without any of its team references, and they tend to be the pairs that get worn nightly rather than kept for occasions.
Construction
Black across the bulk of the upper with the iced purple used as an accent rather than a partner colour, so the shoe stays wearable in daylight and only shows its second colour at close range. Low collar for easy on and off, free ankle, and a forefoot that flexes and creases early because there is no upper structure above it to spread the bend. Flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle, firm underfoot in the way the model has always been. Black uppers hide dirt but show dust and drying, so condition the leather when it starts looking grey, and be careful with cleaners on the purple accent since strong solvents can lift tone from a frosted finish.
