Black toe with white and gym red is the Air Jordan 1 speaking its first language. Red, black and white is the Chicago palette that functions as brand colours in itself, and it is the scheme the shoe wore when Nike produced it for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and released it to the public on 1 April 1985. The company had signed a rookie rather than a superstar because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas, and it projected around 3 million dollars over three years. The first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million dollars. This Mid takes that colour scheme, with black across the toe and red carrying the rest, and puts it on the everyday cut.
Loud colour blocking calls for plain clothes. First: indigo or black denim with a straight leg, a plain white tee, a black jacket, socks white to echo the midfoot panel. Second: grey sweatpants and a black hood, letting the red be the single point of colour in a washed out fit. Never add a second red garment, which turns the shoe into a costume piece. The Mid is the best cut for everyday commuting and cooler evenings. Clean each colour separately so red does not bleed onto white, use foam and a soft brush, keep solvents away from the red panels, and dry naturally out of direct sunlight.
This colour scheme carries the shoe's entire mythology, including the part most often told wrong. The NBA's uniform policy of the time required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, and the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan 1 released. Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built the Banned campaign around it instead of redesigning anything, teaching the sneaker market that transgression sells. Around that, Spike Lee directed early Nike advertising as Mars Blackmon, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan into their records. Red and black is where all of that lives.
The Mid collar sits above the ankle bone and below the full height of the OG, which makes it the most practical of the three cuts for daily use, and it uses a simpler panel arrangement than the Retro High OG. A three colour scheme puts real pressure on that panel work: black at the toe, white through the middle and red across the rest means every seam is a colour boundary, and there is nowhere for a misaligned edge to hide. Nike Air entered the signature line at the Air Jordan 2, so this rides flat and firm with no cushioning unit. The white sections will be the first to show city dust, and the black toe will be the first to scuff pale.
