Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 July 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in University Blue/Black/White. University blue on an Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG points back further than the Bulls. It points to North Carolina, the programme Jordan played for before Nike signed him in October 1984, and one Jordan Brand still supplies alongside Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. That makes UNC the rare Air Jordan colourway that is about the person rather than the franchise. The Retro High OG build reproduces Peter Moore's original 1985 silhouette, complete with the Wings logo that marked the earliest era before the Jumpman took over from the third model onward. Pale blue on that shape is a strange and effective inversion: the most confrontational sneaker of the 1980s, dressed in a college colour.
Two recipes. First, off white or ecru trousers with a navy overshirt, a soft palette where the blue sits as the coolest note and nothing competes. Second, dark straight leg denim with a white tee and a grey cardigan, which grounds the pale upper and stops it looking precious. High tops need trousers that stack or stop clear of the collar; anything catching mid collar ruins the line. Size true to length, snug across the instep. Use a protector spray on the leather, brush before wiping, and keep the pair out of sustained sunlight so the blue does not shift.
Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997 and reached about 5.1 billion dollars by 2022, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars going to Jordan under the royalty term he negotiated as a rookie. College is where that story starts and where the brand still invests, supplying North Carolina, Jordan's own university. Because of that lineage, UNC blue functions inside the catalogue as canon rather than as a seasonal colour, and it appears across the numbered models rather than being tied to any single one. It is also the colourway that reads least aggressive on a high top, which is why it crosses into wardrobes that would not otherwise take a 1.
The Retro High OG is a faithful reproduction rather than an update: full ankle collar, original panel breaks, Wings mark, and Nike Air cushioning underfoot, which entered the line at the second model. University blue is one of the most demanding uppers Jordan sells. It is light enough to show every mark, saturated enough that scuffs read as damage rather than character, and it sits beside white panelling that will yellow at a different rate. There is no dark blocking anywhere to hide dirt. Protect it before the first wear, clean it the same day you dirty it, and accept that toe box creasing will show more sharply on a light leather than on a black one.
