Origin
Released on 26 December 2023 and part of the Jordan Hex Mule line. This release has a eva upper in Off Noir/Off Noir. The Hex Mule exists because Jordan stopped being a shoe and became a division. From 1997 the line was reorganised as Jordan Brand inside Nike, with its own athlete roster, its own apparel and the freedom to make things a basketball department never would. A women's backless mule in Off Noir is the far end of that freedom. Off Noir is a soft, smoked black rather than a hard one, the shade you reach for when you want the Jumpman present but quiet, and it reads as considered rather than loud. You are buying the house mark on a silhouette built for stepping out of, not for playing in. That is the whole point of the brand structure Jordan built after the first decade of court shoes.
Utility
Two ways to run it. First, loungewear with intent: cropped black joggers, a heavy grey sweat crew, silver hoops, and the Off Noir disappears into the outfit so the jewellery does the talking. Second, dressed up: wide leg trousers with a break just above the ankle, a fitted rib tank, and a leather shoulder bag, which lets the tonal black act as a flat shoe stand in. Bare ankles suit it better than socks. Size so your heel sits just short of the back edge, since a mule with overhang scuffs at the rear and slides at the toe. Wipe the upper with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry away from radiators, and never machine wash it.
Influence
Jordan Brand grew far past the hardwood. It became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016 and sponsored its first association football club, Paris Saint-Germain, in 2018, and by 2022 the division was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. That scale is what puts the Jumpman on a house mule instead of only on a court shoe. The mark itself came from Peter Moore, who had Jordan recreate a mid leap pose in Bulls gear, and it now signals the brand with no wordmark attached. Wearing it on something this casual is the modern reading of the logo: recognition without performance, which is exactly how most people meet Jordan now.
Construction
A mule is defined by what it leaves out. There is no heel counter and no closure, so the shoe holds you across the forefoot alone and the fit lives entirely in that band. Expect to size with that in mind: too much room and the mule slaps, too little and the throat digs. Off Noir keeps the panel lines low contrast, so the silhouette reads as one shape from a distance rather than a set of parts. Jordan construction has always been about lockdown under load, and a mule inverts that brief completely, trading containment for speed of entry. Treat it as an indoor and short walk shoe rather than something to cover distance in.
