Casio G-Shock DW-5600JV-7

Origin
The square is where G-Shock began. Kikuo Ibe started the project from the memory of a watch of his father's that he broke, spent roughly two years and about 200 prototypes chasing a target the team called Triple 10, a watch surviving a ten metre drop, ten bar of water pressure and ten years of battery life, and solved it by suspending the module inside the case like a ball instead of armouring it. The DW-5000C launched in April 1983 and the DW-5600 lineage carries that case forward. The DW-5600JV-7 is a colour execution of that original architecture, which means you are wearing the shape that proved the idea, not a later interpretation of it.
Utility
Two builds. First, streetwear: wide-leg denim or cargos, a boxy tee, low-profile skate shoes, the square sitting proud on the wrist as the only hard edge in a soft outfit. Second, travel and training: shorts, a technical layer, the watch under a sleeve where the backlight matters more than the look. Wear it slightly loose so the case can move on impact. Rinse the resin after sweat and seawater, dry it before it goes in a drawer, and keep it out of prolonged direct sun, which is what actually ages resin. Replace the strap and bezel rather than the watch when they finally go.
Influence
G-Shock did not sell well in Japan at first and found its early audience among construction workers and police. It broke out in the United States after Casio's American arm ran a commercial using a DW-5200C as a hockey puck, an ad attacked as false advertising until a television station tested it live on air and the watch held. Skateboarding adopted it for durability and its fit with baggy clothing, and hip-hop followed. Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Eminem and Snoop Dogg are all documented wearers. NASA has flight-qualified square models including the DW-5600E. That is a rare combination of credentials: skate park, recording studio and orbit.
Construction
Shock Resist is the whole engineering argument: the module floats inside the resin case so impact energy travels around the movement rather than into it. That is why a square G-Shock survives drops that destroy watches costing twenty times more, and why Casio could put a G-Shock under a 24.97 tonne truck for a Guinness World Record confirmed in December 2017. The resin case is a structural component, not a shell, and the strap integrates into it. Practically, this is a watch you stop protecting. It goes into toolboxes, gym bags and airport trays without thought, and the resin takes scuffs that buff back rather than cracks that end it.
