A G-Shock in red on a finger rather than a wrist is a strange and specific object, and it only makes sense once you know how loaded the square case is. Kikuo Ibe began the G-Shock project from the memory of a watch of his father's that he broke, spent roughly two years and about 200 prototypes chasing a Triple 10 target, a watch surviving a ten metre drop, ten bar of water pressure and ten years of battery, and solved it by suspending the module inside the case like a ball. The DW-5000C launched in April 1983. That silhouette is now recognisable at any scale, which is exactly what a nano ring version depends on.
