Origin
Released on 1 July 2025 and part of the Rocket X 3 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Black. The Rocket X 3 in White and Black is Hoka at its sharpest end. The brand did not begin as a race shoe company: it began in Annecy in 2009 with two former Salomon employees who wanted to survive descents faster, and it built its reputation over rough ground rather than on a track. Racing came as the cushioning philosophy proved itself, first in ultras, then across shorter distances on the road. A white upper with black detailing is the traditional uniform of a shoe meant to be looked at while it is moving quickly. This is the part of the line where Hoka stops arguing about comfort and starts arguing about time.
Utility
Two ways to use it. First, the intended one: race day and hard sessions, worn with thin technical socks, saved for tempo efforts, time trials and the days you have circled on the calendar. Second, the sparing crossover: black shorts or slim track pants and a white tee, treating the white and black colourway as a clean athletic accent rather than an everyday shoe. Do a couple of shorter fast runs in it before racing so your calves adapt to the rolling geometry. Rinse mud off immediately, dry at room temperature, and never store it compressed at the bottom of a kit bag, since fast shoes lose their feel when the foam is left crushed.
Influence
Hoka's racing credibility is not borrowed. Jim Walmsley, signed shortly after his 2016 Western States attempt, became the brand's defining athlete, winning Western States multiple times and in 2023 becoming the first American man to win UTMB, taking the course record in prototypes of the Tecton X 3. Hoka went on to become title sponsor of UTMB, putting its name on the sport it grew up in. That is the lineage a race day shoe inherits: not a marketing claim about speed, but a record of finishing lines where the brand's cushioning philosophy was tested at the very front of the field.
Construction
Race oriented shoes ask a different question of a brand built on foam: how do you keep the cushioning advantage without carrying weight. Hoka's answer across its line has been to chase a low weight to cushion ratio rather than pile on bulk, and to use rocker geometry, a rounded sole profile paired with a low heel to toe drop, so the foot rolls forward instead of stalling. White uppers on fast shoes are always thin and airy by necessity, so treat this as a shoe for dry, hard surfaces rather than a daily beater. Keep it out of the rotation for slow miles and it will hold its shape and its finish far longer.
