This duffel puts the Jumpman into repeat. The mark itself is the house signature, a silhouette of Michael Jordan mid leap with legs split, created after Peter Moore had Jordan recreate a pose from a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Summer Olympics, with Jordan wearing Bulls gear for the new shot. Turning a logo into a monogram pattern is a move borrowed from luggage and leather goods, and it only works when the mark is recognisable at a glance from across a room. Very few sports logos qualify. Rendering it on denim rather than nylon pushes the bag further from a gym product and closer to everyday luggage, which is where Jordan Brand accessories have been heading since it became a standalone Nike division in 1997.
Utility
A 25 litre duffel is the two night bag. Packed properly it takes a change of clothes, a wash kit and a pair of shoes, which makes it the right size for a gym to office run or a short trip. Carry it by the handles with a plain outfit, since a monogram print fights hard against patterned clothing, and let denim sit against black, grey or indigo rather than competing colours. The second use is as a kit bag: shoes in a separate pouch so the interior does not pick up sole dirt. The Jumpman functions as a brand colour and a logo at once, and it carries the same weight on a bag as it does on a shoe. Jordan Brand grew from a signature basketball line into a division generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike by 2022, with apparel, accessories and its own athlete roster spanning Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson, Luka Doncic, Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Aaron Judge and Maya Moore. It has also moved outside basketball entirely, becoming sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and sponsoring Paris Saint-Germain in 2018. Construction
Denim is an unusual choice for a duffel and it changes how the bag behaves. It is heavier and stiffer than technical nylon, it holds its shape better when half empty, and it will fade and soften at the stress points with use rather than staying uniform, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on your taste. The monogram is carried across the body of the bag, so the pattern is the surface rather than a badge. At 25 litres this is the weekend or gym bag size, big enough for a change of clothes and shoes and small enough to stay within most cabin allowances. Denim is also not waterproof, so treat the contents accordingly.
