City of Cinema is a Dunk built around film rather than sport, and the theme runs through the make up rather than sitting on it: tones borrowed from a screening room, detailing that references projection and premiere culture, and a palette that behaves differently under artificial light than under daylight. Nike SB has always been the division allowed to make a shoe about a place or an idea instead of a game, which is how a skate silhouette ends up carrying a love letter to a film industry. The Dunk works for it because the panel structure reads like a set of frames, and because SB releases are made in numbers small enough to be specific.
A themed upper wants a plain, dark outfit that lets the detail surface up close. Black wide leg trousers with a charcoal knit, or faded black denim with a plain grey hoodie, so nothing competes. If the make up carries a reflective or metallic element, evening is when it earns its keep. Keep them out of rain, because specialty finishes and treated panels are exactly what water ruins first. Sizing follows the Dunk last, long through the toe, with half down suiting most feet and skaters often staying true. Keep the box and the extra laces, since on SB releases those are part of the object.
Nike has made films as often as it has made advertisements, working with Wieden+Kennedy since 1976 and producing work that ran as entertainment in its own right, including the 2005 Touch of Gold film with Ronaldinho. That instinct, treating a commercial as a short rather than a sales pitch, is why the brand can put a cinema theme on a shoe without it feeling borrowed. Nike SB inherited the same posture at a smaller scale, making releases that behave like limited edition art objects rather than seasonal product, sold to an audience that reads them closely.
An SB Dunk Low, so a padded tongue and collar to absorb board impact, a Zoom Air insole underneath and a rubber cupsole with skate tread. Themed SB releases put material variety across the panels and detail into the lining, the insole and the lace options, so the shoe you take out of the box has more in it than the photographs show. Treat each panel on its own terms: dry brush anything napped, damp wipe anything smooth, and leave specialty finishes alone. If a make up uses a reflective or treated surface, avoid solvent cleaners entirely, since those coatings do not survive them and cannot be reapplied.
