Part of Nike's Blazer SB line. This release has a suede upper in Brown/Black. The Blazer was Nike basketball before Nike had Air, a plain leather high top from the years when the company was still finding out what it was. Nike SB later took it back for skating, which needed exactly what the Blazer already had: a flat sole, a simple upper and a shape that could take a beating. The Zoom Blazer Mid SB adds cushioning under the heel for the impact skating actually generates. This pair runs brown with black, a warm earth tone against a hard neutral, which drops the Blazer's loud oversized Swoosh into something you can wear without it shouting. Brown suede has always been the skater's version of this shoe.
Brown suede wants earth tones or full contrast, nothing in between. Try washed brown carpenter trousers, a cream hoodie and a black cap for a tonal build, or go the other way with black jeans, a black tee and a light jacket so the brown is the only warm thing in the outfit. The mid collar looks best with a slight stack rather than a cuff. They run true to length and slightly narrow, and suede softens fast. Brush suede dry with a crepe brush and never soak it; water marks brown suede permanently. If you are actually skating in them, expect the Swoosh panel to shred first, which is by design.
Nike SB's history includes a genuine misstep: the 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art, the public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, the apology and the out of court settlement. That episode is part of why the sub brand's most respected shoes are the plain ones. The Blazer is the oldest shape in the SB catalogue and it carries the most credibility, partly because it predates the corporate interest in skating by decades. Brown and black is the working colourway, the one that looks better beaten than new, which is the only aesthetic skateboarding has ever really agreed on.
The mid cut sits between the original high top collar and a low, giving ankle coverage without restricting the flex you need to feel the board. Expect a suede or leather upper with reinforcement across the high wear areas, a padded tongue that takes the pressure of tight lacing, and the oversized Swoosh stitched across the quarter, which doubles as an abrasion panel. Underneath is a flat outsole with a herringbone tread and Zoom cushioning at the heel, Nike's compressed air unit approach applied to impact rather than to running economy. Brown over black hides scuffing better than any pale colourway, which is a practical argument as much as an aesthetic one.
