Released on 13 September 2019 and part of the Crazy BYW line. This release has the Green/White colourway. Green is the loud version of the Crazy BYW, and it changes what the shoe is for. Where a blackout execution asks you to read the structure, a saturated green forces the silhouette forward and makes the pod tooling underfoot impossible to ignore. The BYW belongs to the part of adidas that has always wanted its engineering visible, the same instinct that produced the adidas 1 of 2005 marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe with a microprocessor running five million calculations a second, and springblade with its splayed blades instead of foam. Pharrell Williams works here as a designer collaborator, and picking green on a basketball shape is a colourist's decision rather than a sportswear one.
Utility
Treat green as the outfit's centre and build cold around it. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers with a white tee and a black cap, so the shoe supplies all the colour and the pods stay visible under a straight hem. Recipe two: grey sweatpants with a cream hoodie, where a neutral top half lets the green sit warm instead of aggressive. Bright knit uppers stain rather than scuff, so treat with a fabric protector before the first wear and brush dust off dry. Avoid soaking a shoe with visible under foot pods, since trapped water is slow to clear. Rotate it rather than wearing it daily if you want the colour to stay true.
Influence
adidas built the designer sneaker partnership as a category, beginning with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and later extending it to musicians including Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and Beyonce. Pharrell's adidas work has consistently favoured colour over graphics, which is why a plain green execution reads as authored rather than random. That is a different relationship to the one adidas got by accident when Run-DMC released My Adidas unpaid in 1986 and the endorsement followed the song. Both routes deliver cultural weight. Only one of them starts with a designer choosing a green and defending it.
Construction
The BYW puts its cushioning pods under the foot where you can see them, which means the outsole is part of the design rather than a hidden component. The upper is knit and lightly layered so the tooling carries the visual weight, and the Three Stripes are worked into the cage rather than stuck on it, faithful to how adidas has treated the mark structurally since buying it from Karhu Sports in 1952. In green, every panel junction and every change of texture registers, because saturated colour flattens nothing and hides less than black. The upside is that the silhouette reads correctly from a distance. The cost is that scuffs and dirt show early on a bright knit.
