    Culture Note™

Nike SB exists because skateboarders adopted the Dunk long before Nike had a skate division, and the company eventually built the line around that fact. Its collaborations run through skate shops, skaters and skate owned brands rather than fashion houses, which is why an SB Dunk from a skater founded label carries weight that a general release does not. Gnarhunters comes from that world, and the pairing follows SB's established pattern of handing the silhouette to people inside the scene. It is a very different collaboration logic from Nike's corporate partnerships, which have historically meant agencies like Wieden and Kennedy from 1976, Apple for Nike+, or league deals with the NBA.
Skate them or dress them down. With baggy denim and a graphic tee they read exactly as intended, and the padded collar makes them genuinely comfortable for standing around all evening. The second route is cleaner: cropped chinos, a plain crewneck and white socks, which lets the collaboration graphics do the talking. SB Dunks run slightly snug because of the padding, so take the larger size if you are between. Ideal for skating, gigs and long days on foot, not for rain. Clean suede and nubuck with a dedicated brush and eraser block rather than water, and reglue or patch the ollie panel early if you actually skate them.
Nike's relationship with skate and its adjacent subcultures has not always been handled well. In 2005 Nike SB appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer, which drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005 before the matter was settled out of court. That episode is why SB's later collaborations lean on actual participants rather than borrowed imagery. It sits inside a bigger pattern: from the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion and its shoes became youth staples, but skate always demanded that the brand show up as a participant rather than a sponsor.
Built on the SB Dunk Low Pro chassis, which differs from a standard Dunk in the ways skaters care about: a thicker padded tongue, a cushioned collar and an insole tuned for repeated impact from a board. The upper uses panelled construction so the collaborator's colours and graphics can be split across overlays, and the low profile cupsole with herringbone style tread gives grip on griptape while keeping board feel. The tread logic goes back to Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron because he wanted a better sole, which remains Nike's founding engineering idea. Expect the ollie area on the outer toe to be the first thing to wear through, as it is on every skate shoe.
