Designed by Peter Moore and released on 21 September 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Barely Orange/Black/White colourway. Barely Orange is a colour name that admits its own restraint, and that is a strange thing to find on a shoe whose founding story is about refusing to tone down. The Air Jordan 1 arrived in April 1985 after Nike signed Michael Jordan the previous October, and its earliest identity was built on hard contrast and a fight about how much white a basketball shoe had to contain. Decades later the Mid is where the line goes to experiment, because it carries Peter Moore's outline without carrying the OG colour canon. A washed pastel orange is that freedom used well: soft enough to read as a wardrobe piece, structured enough that nobody mistakes what silhouette it is.
Two recipes. First, cream trousers and a white tee, where the orange reads as warmth rather than as colour and the whole outfit sits in one tonal family. Second, mid wash denim with a navy knit, using cool blue to push the pale orange forward so it stops looking washed out. The Mid works best with a cropped or cuffed hem that clears the collar. Size true to length with a snug instep. Spray a protector before wearing, brush before you wipe so grit does not get dragged across a light upper, and clean the midsole with a soft eraser instead of any bleach based cleaner.
The Air Jordan 1 made sneaker collecting a mass activity, and the resale market it anchors has been valued at roughly two billion dollars, with 1985 pairs reaching around 20,000 dollars on StockX. Soft pastel colourways sit deliberately outside that heat. They are the part of the catalogue that gets worn to work rather than photographed and stored, which is arguably the more useful half of a silhouette this famous. Jordan Brand has been a Nike division since 1997, and the volume it does across models like this Mid is what funds the archive projects and the collaborations everybody talks about instead.
The Mid height gives you a padded collar without the full commitment of the OG high, which is why it disappears under a hem more easily than any other cut of the 1. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model and gives the shoe a firm, supportive ride rather than a soft one. Pale orange is a demanding upper. It sits close to skin tones, so any dirt reads as a stain instead of as wear, and it will lift towards yellow under sustained sunlight. There is no dark blocking to absorb marks.
