Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 25 August 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Taxi/White/Black. Taxi is the shorthand this line uses for that specific yellow, and on the Jordan 1 Mid it does something the original 1985 colourways never tried: it makes the shoe read like signage. The Mid exists because the Air Jordan 1 outgrew its own decade. Peter Moore's high top from 1985 became the base pattern for a whole family of cuts once the line turned into Jordan Brand, and the Mid is the version most people actually wear, cheaper to keep in rotation and easier to pull on. Yellow against black and white is the loudest useful combination in the catalogue, bright enough to carry an outfit on its own but built on a shape that has been familiar for four decades, so it never reads as a novelty.
Utility
Yellow needs discipline elsewhere. Run it with black straight leg jeans, a black tee and a white cap so the shoe is the only bright object, or invert it with a cream sweatshirt, washed grey trousers and black socks for a softer contrast. Both work because the shoe already contains black and white. Avoid pairing it with a second saturated colour unless you want the outfit to read as a costume. The Mid runs true to size for most feet and the collar softens after a week. Keep the white midsole clean with a magic sponge, brush the yellow panels dry, and store away from direct sunlight, which dulls bright dyes faster than wear does.
Influence
The Jordan 1 became the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, and the Mid is how that habit reached everyone who was never going to spend retro money. The wider line runs through hip hop, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z name checking Jordan and his sneakers, and through Nike's Spike Lee directed campaigns with Lee playing Mars Blackmon. Jordan Brand's collaborators now stretch from Off-White under Virgil Abloh and Comme des Garcons to Travis Scott and Drake. Loud colourways like Taxi are the everyday end of that story: the same silhouette, worn without ceremony, in a colour that wants to be seen.
Construction
The Mid keeps the Jordan 1 panel layout, the ankle collar sitting between the High and the Low, and the Wings logo that marks the earliest era of the line. Colour is doing the structural work here: taxi yellow on the panels reads brightest where the material is smooth and darkest in the seams, so the shoe looks graphic from a distance and detailed up close. Underfoot it is a flat cupsole, stable and firm, without the Air unit that entered the line from the Air Jordan II. Bright yellow is unforgiving about dirt at the toe and the midsole, so a soft brush after wear and a mild cleaner on the sole edge is the difference between a fresh pair and a tired one.
