Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 April 2017 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Royal-White. Royal is one of the original Air Jordan 1 colourways, black and blue, and the 2017 retro brought it back in High OG form for a market that had grown up around it. The shoe itself was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, produced for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and released to the public on 1 April 1985, after Nike signed the Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984 for six years and about 2.5 million dollars with a royalty on sales, a contract roughly three times any other in the league. Nike had modest hopes, around 3 million dollars over three years. The first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million dollars, and Royal was part of that first wave.
Black and blue is a night palette. Black jeans and a black overshirt lets the royal panels register as the only colour, and it is the cleanest way to wear this pair. For daytime, medium wash denim and a grey crew softens it and stops the black reading heavy. Skip navy clothing entirely because it muddies against royal. Lace fully for the original High stance. Fit runs long and narrow, so a half size down is usual. Store an older retro upright with paper in the toe, keep it out of damp storage where midsole degradation accelerates, and clean the blue with minimal water so the dye does not lift onto the black.
Royal is one of the colourways collectors use to date themselves, because it belongs to the first year of the line rather than to the retro era. The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market the shoe anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Spike Lee directed the earliest advertising playing Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, and the Banned campaign turned the NBA's 51 percent white shoe rule and its 5,000 dollar per game fine into marketing, with Nike paying rather than redesigning. Owning a Royal High OG is a way of siding with the beginning of that story rather than its many sequels.
This is the pre Air era of the line: Nike Air cushioning arrived with the Air Jordan II, so the 1 rides a stitched rubber cupsole and flat foam. The High OG cut restores the original tall collar, the padded tongue and the Wings logo on the ankle panel rather than the Jumpman. Black and royal blue is a durable combination, because both hide dust and creasing and there is very little white to grey out. One honest caveat on any older retro pair: polyurethane midsoles degrade by hydrolysis over time and Nike has not published which polyurethane it uses, so a pair that has sat unworn for years is not automatically safe to play in. Wear it, but wear it knowing that.
