Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 November 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Varsity Red/Black/Summit White colourway. Chicago is the colourway the whole line is measured against, and this is it on the Retro Low OG in preschool sizing. Red, black and white came straight off the Bulls uniform Michael Jordan wore as the rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 for six years and about 2.5 million dollars, a deal roughly three times any other in the NBA and unusual for handing him a royalty on sales. Nike was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own, so it bought a young player's identity rather than an established star's. The Low OG keeps the original panel geometry and the Wings era detailing, dropped below the ankle and scaled to a first pair.
Keep it simple because the palette is already doing three colours. Plain navy or black joggers with a white tee, or denim shorts and a red top that picks up the toe panel, both work and neither fights the shoe. Preschool sizing means checking the fit every few months rather than every year, since growth outpaces wear at this age. The low cut is easy to get on independently, which matters more than styling. Clean the white leather with a damp cloth immediately after mud or grass, because both stain permanently once dry, and avoid the washing machine entirely: it separates the cupsole adhesive and warps the shape.
Chicago is the most quoted colour arrangement in sneakers, which is why it gets rebuilt at every size the brand makes. The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market the shoe anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Spike Lee directed the first advertising playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried the shoe into music. A preschool Chicago is the brand handing the origin palette to someone who will treat it as a shoe rather than an artefact, which is arguably the healthiest way to own one.
This is pre Air construction. Nike Air cushioning entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so a 1 rides on a stitched rubber cupsole and firm foam, which for a small child means a stable, flat, predictable platform rather than a springy one. The Low OG cut sits below the ankle bone, so it goes on quickly, and preschool builds typically simplify the closure for exactly that reason. The white leather between the red and black panels is the part that will show every scrape, and on a shoe worn by a child that happens in week one. Buy it knowing that. The upside is that a cupsole shoe takes abuse structurally even when it looks rough cosmetically.
