Released on 3 February 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Blue/Turtledove/Moonbeam. Blue Haze is a soft, washed out blue, the kind of colour that looks like it faded on purpose, and it does something clever to the 9060. This silhouette is a deliberate distortion of the 99x runners, a family that ran from the 990 in 1982 through the 990v2 in 1998, the 991 in 2001 and the 992 in 2006, with the straight lines of those originals swollen and curved into something far less disciplined. A pale, hazy blue softens that aggression. The shape still reads as exaggerated, but the colour reads as calm, and the two pulling against each other is why this version works on people who would never wear a chunky sneaker.
Utility
Pale blue behaves like a neutral if you keep the rest quiet. Recipe one: cream or stone wide leg trousers with a white tee, a light summer stack where the blue is the coolest note. Recipe two: grey sweatshorts and a navy tee, letting the haze sit between the two blues instead of competing with either. Avoid black outfits, which make the pastel look washed rather than deliberate. The silhouette is tall and wide, so a tapered or cropped hem keeps the balance. Light suede in Indian city conditions needs protector spray before wearing, a dry brush after, and no rain at all if you want to keep it looking new.
Influence
The 9060 exists because New Balance's archive became culturally valuable enough to play with. The 99x runners were the archetypal American dad shoe, plain and grey, worn for comfort rather than status by people including Steve Jobs, a documented wearer of New Balance 990s. Normcore turned that ordinariness into a design position in the 2010s, and once the plain version was fashionable the exaggerated version became possible. A pastel blue build is the friendliest end of that experiment, softening a shape that started as a provocation. It is the version you wear when you want the silhouette without the swagger that usually comes attached to it.
Construction
Mesh and suede layer across the upper in tonal blues, with lighter panels catching the eye and darker ones grounding the base so the volume does not look like a single block. Suede in a pale blue is a commitment: it shows water marks and dust immediately, and it needs sealing before the first wear rather than after the first accident. Cushioning is ABZORB, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend designed to disperse heel strike impact before it climbs into the knees and hips, which is what keeps a tall, heavy looking shoe comfortable over a long day. The block N on the side wall and the brand's width fittings both carry over from the running models this shape descends from.
