Origin
Released on 1 May 2025 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a leather upper in Sea Salt/Castlerock. Grey is New Balance's real signature, more than any single model. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe in grey, the suburban running shoe worn for comfort rather than status, and that plainness is exactly what normcore and then high fashion reclaimed in the 2010s. Grey Day is the brand celebrating that fact deliberately, and applying it to the 9060 puts the house colour on the house's strangest silhouette. The 9060 warps the 99x language, the line that runs from the 990 in 1982 through the 990v6 in 2022, into something sculpted and contemporary. Rendered in tonal grey, that distortion stops looking experimental and starts looking inevitable, which is the whole argument of the colour.
Utility
Tonal grey is a base layer for an outfit, not an accent. Recipe one: grey sweatpants with a clean taper, a heather crewneck and a black shell jacket, a full tonal build where texture separates the layers. Recipe two: charcoal trousers, a white shirt and a navy blazer worn loose, using the sneaker to soften tailoring rather than fight it. Best for daily city wear, long travel days and anything involving standing. Grey shows dirt readily on pale panels, so protect before wearing and keep them out of wet weather. Confirm width before sizing. Brush suede dry, use a soft eraser on scuffs, avoid soaking, and dry slowly away from direct heat.
Influence
No brand owns a colour the way New Balance owns grey. Steve Jobs was a documented wearer of the 990s, and the model was worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, all of which happened without a campaign. That accidental cultural life is what makes a grey celebration credible rather than cynical. The Made in England 99x models ran a parallel story in British terrace and casual dressing. Grey Day on the 9060 collapses the two halves of the brand together, the archive that earned the colour and the new silhouette that inherits it. Teddy Santis, appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, formalised this treatment of the archive as a living fashion line.
Construction
A tonal grey build is the hardest test of a shoe's shape, because nothing is hidden by contrast and nothing is announced by it. The 9060 answers with layering: panelled sections, mesh and a heavily sculpted midsole, with the block N on the side wall as the fixed point. New Balance's cushioning heritage runs through ENCAP, introduced with the 995 in 1986, a moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core that supplies structure, durability and low compression set, and ABZORB, the softer foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact before it travels up the leg. Width fittings remain part of the fit conversation, a habit the company kept from its arch support origins in 1906.
