Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 October 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a satin upper in Black/Medium Grey/White. Satin Shadow is the High OG cut, which means the full original pattern: the tall collar, the Wings logo that marks the earliest era of the line, and the panel layout Peter Moore drew before the shoe reached the public on 1 April 1985. Shadow is the grey and black split that has been part of the vocabulary almost as long. What is new is the material. Satin puts a formal wear surface on a basketball shape, a move this house has made before, most famously when patent leather arrived on the Air Jordan XI and gave people a reason to wear basketball shoes with suits.
Two recipes. Evening: a black midi skirt or wide black trousers, a fitted grey or black knit, and the satin picking up whatever light is in the room. Or daytime contrast: washed grey denim with an oversized white shirt, letting the sheen sit against something matte and plain. Highs need a hem that stops above the collar, always. Sizing is close to true on the women's last, and the high collar wants proper lacing to lock the heel. Never wet clean satin, blot spills immediately, use a dry soft brush, and keep them well away from rain and rough surfaces.
Jordan Brand's artist collaborators include Nicki Minaj and Billie Eilish, and their involvement is part of how the High OG stopped being read as menswear by default. The line's cultural entry point was hip hop and Spike Lee's advertising, but its second life has been in fashion, alongside Dior, Comme des Garcons and Off-White under Virgil Abloh. A satin women's High sits exactly on that seam, using the most recognisable outline in sport as an evening shoe. The shape carries enough history that dressing it in satin reads as a statement about the shoe rather than a softening of it.
Satin panels across the quarter and toe in shadow grey and black, on the high cut pattern with its padded collar and Wings mark. Satin behaves nothing like leather: it catches light in sheets rather than points, it does not crease so much as ripple, and it marks permanently where leather would only scuff. The high collar changes fit as much as the material does, wrapping the ankle and asking for a considered lacing choice rather than a default one. The cupsole below is the familiar stitched rubber. This is the most protected version of the silhouette and the least weatherproof one at the same time.
