Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 March 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Varsity Red/Black/White. Chicago on a golf shoe is a deliberate provocation. Red, black and white are the colours Michael Jordan wore as a Bulls rookie when Nike signed him on 26 October 1984, and they function as brand colours in their own right, carrying more history than most national flags in this industry. Putting them on a course, a place with a dress code and a very long memory of who it was built for, is the same move the brand made when it let its shoe be fined off a basketball floor rather than redesigned. The silhouette is the 1 Low, reworked for golf, which means the most recognisable colourway in sneakers is now something you can walk eighteen holes in.
On the course: white or stone trousers with a black or white polo, and let the red do everything. Matching a red polo to red panels is the one mistake here, it turns a sports shoe into a uniform. Off the course: black jeans, a white tee and a black jacket takes the same pair to a bar afterwards, which is half the appeal of a golf shoe shaped like this. Wear cushioned golf socks rather than no shows given the distance walked, keep a brush in the bag for the outsole, and rotate with a second pair for wet rounds so the leather has time to dry out fully between uses.
Jordan Brand's move outside basketball is well documented: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team from 2016, first association football sponsorship with Paris Saint Germain in 2018, and signed athletes across the NFL with Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott and MLB with Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter. Golf fits that expansion precisely because it is the sport furthest from the shoe's origins. The Chicago palette meanwhile carries its own cultural record, from Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising to references in records by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and it is instantly readable to anyone on the fairway under forty.
A leather upper in the Chicago palette on a low cut golf build, which changes the parts you cannot see: the outsole and traction package are made for turf rather than pavement, and the platform is stiffer than a lifestyle pair to hold you steady through a swing. Treat it as course equipment first. The red panels are the maintenance concern, since red leather fades in strong sun and stains from wet grass, so clean them the same day rather than the following week. Brush the outsole out while any turf is still damp so it does not pack solid, and let the pair dry away from direct heat with the laces loosened.
