Released on 15 June 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Blue Rush/Cream White/Gum. Sporty & Rich trades in the visual language of the tennis club, the pool and the health spa, which makes the Samba an unexpected base to work from: this is a shoe built for football on frozen and indoor surfaces, not for a members' lawn. Blue Rush is what resolves it. A clear, saturated blue is the colour that connects athletic clubwear to sport without going near a team kit, and on a Samba it lifts a shoe that spends most of its life in black or white into something recreational. The pairing works because both parties are dealing in nostalgia for a time when sportswear looked like sportswear.
Two ways. Club adjacent: white or cream cotton trousers or tailored shorts, a knitted polo, crew socks pulled up slightly, and the blue reads as intentional leisure. Or urban: black straight leg jeans with a grey sweatshirt, where the blue is the only colour in the fit and does all the lifting. Good for spring and summer, weekends, casual offices and travel. Bad in wet weather since suede takes water rings and a bright dye shows them clearly. Sambas run long and narrow, so most people go half a size down. Protect the suede before wearing, brush with a suede brush in one direction, keep the shoe out of direct sun when stored, and clean the gum toned sole early with a damp cloth rather than letting the dirt set.
adidas invented the modern fashion partnership in sneakers, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney from 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and the wave of smaller labels working with the brand today runs on the same premise: the archive is more valuable than any new silhouette. The Samba's cultural authority was not manufactured, it accumulated, the same way the Superstar's did after hip hop adopted the shell toe on its own and adidas followed with the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. A club coded blue Samba is that authority being borrowed by a label with a very specific taste.
The Samba's construction is unchanged by a collaboration and that is the point. A low profile upper, the suede toe overlay that protects the front of the shoe where a ball makes contact, the Three Stripes stitched to the flank in the structural application adidas has used since the stripes reinforced the upper, and a flat outsole built for grip on hard surfaces. In a strong blue, the eye reads the stripes and the toe overlay as clear geometric shapes rather than as texture, so the shoe becomes graphic in a way that black and white versions are not. Bright blue dye also fades in sustained sunlight faster than neutral tones, so this is a colourway to store out of the light.
