Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 September 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in French Blue/Black/White. Split French Blue does something the 1985 shoe never would: it divides the shoe down the middle, running two different treatments across a single silhouette so the left and right sides refuse to agree. That only works because everybody already knows what an Air Jordan 1 is supposed to look like. The original was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for the Chicago Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, produced for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and released publicly on 1 April 1985. Split designs are the brand playing against that memory, and French blue is a softer, more European shade than the varsity royal that usually shows up on this shoe.
An asymmetric shoe needs a symmetrical outfit. Plain black or grey trousers with a solid crew neck lets the split read clearly, and it is the only styling this pair really needs. The second recipe is denim with a white shirt, keeping everything classic above the ankle so the shoe is the single irregular element. Avoid layered streetwear with competing details, since the eye then has nowhere to rest. Fit runs long and narrow, so a half size down suits most feet. Clean each half separately with the tools that suit its finish, avoid soaking a multi finish upper because adhesives and dyes react differently to water, and let the pair dry away from heat.
Deconstructed and split executions belong to the era when the Air Jordan 1 became a designer's object. Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS all took the silhouette apart in their own ways, and Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work on the 1, 4 and 6 normalised reversing and relocating its most familiar elements. Once outside partners have done that, the brand can do it in house. The 1 tolerates it because it created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, referenced in music by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z and pushed into film language by Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising.
Nike Air cushioning entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so this Mid runs on a rubber cupsole and firm foam. The Mid collar closes at the ankle, sitting between the Low and the High OG in both hold and ease. A split construction means the two halves of the shoe can differ in colour, panel arrangement or finish, and that has a practical consequence worth knowing: the two sides may age and soil at different rates, so cleaning has to be done half by half rather than in one pass. The rest is standard Air Jordan 1 architecture, wide flat laces, layered panels and a cupsole that softens with wear instead of compressing.
