Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 July 2022 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Light Iron Ore/Varsity Red/Sail. The Air Jordan 1 High OG is the shoe that made an athlete into a business. Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and marketed him with Spike Lee playing Mars Blackmon, and the model became a fixture of urban and hip hop fashion long before it became a collector's category. Newstalgia Chenille is a women's execution that treats the silhouette as a garment rather than as sports equipment, using chenille patches as the design event, so the branding sits as embroidery and texture instead of print or plastic. Style code DJ4891 061 identifies it. It is the Jordan 1 handled the way a varsity jacket is handled, which is a considered move rather than a decorative one.
Recipe one: black straight-leg jeans with a cream knit and a varsity or wool bomber, letting the chenille echo the jacket's own patchwork logic. Recipe two: a midi skirt with opaque tights and an oversized grey sweatshirt, the contrast styling that high top Jordans have carried since the 1990s. Wear these dry: chenille and rain are a bad combination, and a wet patch dries matted. Women's Jordan 1s fit close, so try before sizing down. Lace all eyelets on a high top or the collar collapses. Brush the patches with a soft dry brush, clean the leather separately with a damp cloth, and store with shoe trees to keep the ankle upright.
Two corrections are worth carrying. The Jordan 1 was never banned by the NBA: the shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, and Nike paid the fines and built its advertising around the story. And the model's status did not come from basketball performance but from what happened after, when Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples of street dress from the 1980s onward. Newstalgia sits in a later chapter again, when women's make-ups stopped being resized men's colourways and started carrying their own material ideas, which is where the most interesting Jordan 1 design has been happening.
The original 1 pattern: panelled leather upper, high padded collar, wings at the ankle, a rubber cupsole and Nike Air sealed in the midsole. What is different here is surface. Chenille patches are a raised, fuzzy textile applied to the upper, so the shoe carries texture where a standard pair carries stitching and plain leather, and light behaves differently across it. Style code DJ4891 061 marks this women's make-up. That texture is also the maintenance issue: chenille traps dust and flattens under pressure, so it needs a soft brush and cannot be scrubbed or soaked. Everything else about the shoe ages the way a Jordan 1 always has, creasing at the toe and softening at the collar.
