Released on 18 January 2025 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Sea Salt/Black. A Year of the Snake edition tells you how far New Balance has travelled from its origins. This is a company that began in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company in the Boston area, selling arch supports to people who spent all day on their feet, and it now designs seasonal releases for calendars its founder never observed. The 9060 is the right silhouette for that job. Built from the panel language of the brand's 99x runners and deliberately distorted, it is the most expressive shape in the modern line, with enough surface and layering to carry a themed treatment without the design collapsing into gimmick.
A themed pair should be the loudest thing you wear. Recipe one: plain black trousers and a black tee, letting the shoe carry every detail without competition. Recipe two: raw indigo jeans with a plain cream knit, a neutral frame that lets the colourway read clearly from a distance. Avoid graphic tees entirely with this one. Keep hems tapered or cropped so the sole shape and panel work stay visible, since hiding them defeats the purpose. Care depends on the materials in play: brush suede sections dry, use a foam cleaner on mesh, and keep any metallic or specialty finish away from brushes and solvents.
New Balance's reach is now genuinely global, and its sponsorship list is the evidence: FC Tokyo from 2021, Al Sadd from 2022, Toluca from 2023, Sao Paulo from 2024, Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen from 2025, alongside the NBA, the Boston Red Sox and Team Ireland at Rio 2016. A brand operating on that many calendars ends up designing for them. That is the honest reading of a zodiac release: not a heritage story, but a company acknowledging that its audience is no longer mostly American. The 9060 is the model it uses for those moments because it is the one shape in the line built to be looked at.
The 9060 upper is built from layered mesh and suede across a high volume shape, which is precisely why a themed colourway works on it: there are enough separate panels to carry texture changes and tonal shifts without needing printed graphics. Underneath, ABZORB does the cushioning, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend designed to disperse heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips, softer and lighter than the ENCAP polyurethane and EVA system that structures the 990. The block N still sits on the side wall as the house mark, and the brand's multiple width fittings still apply, which is the part of any New Balance that never changes regardless of what the box art says.
