Origin
Released on 1 March 2025 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a mesh upper in Core Black/Cream White/Magic Beige. The Samba is the shoe that proves adidas's original thesis, which was to build for one event rather than for a category. It was made for footballers training on frozen ground, and every part of the shape follows from that brief: low profile, thin sole, a toe you can feel a ball through. The OG designation means the archival proportions rather than the modernised ones. Black with cream reverses the shoe's most familiar arrangement, where a white upper carries black stripes. Here the body goes dark and the three stripe overlays and the T toe read as warm off white, which softens the contrast and pushes the shoe away from the sports field and towards something closer to a dress trainer.
Utility
Recipe one: black slim straight jeans with a cream fisherman knit, matching the sweater to the overlays so the shoe looks intentional rather than incidental. Recipe two: charcoal wool trousers with a black overshirt for evening, where the low profile of a Samba reads sharper under tailoring than a chunky trainer ever does. The Samba runs narrow and long, so consider a half size down if you have a slim foot and expect the leather to give across the width, not the length. These are flat soled with minimal cushioning, so they are a going out shoe rather than an all day standing shoe. Keep the cream suede dry, brush it with a crepe brush, and never scrub it wet or the nap will mat permanently.
Influence
The Samba sits in the same category as the Superstar and the Stan Smith, the adidas models that became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing and then the foundation of the Originals line. That crossover was never engineered: adidas entered culture through sport and then through music it did not pay for, when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid and only afterwards signed the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The Samba's revival followed the same rule, driven by wearers before campaigns. Black with cream is the version that dresses up, which is why it turns up in places a football trainer has no business being.
Construction
Leather upper, suede T shaped toe overlay, and a gum coloured rubber outsole is the Samba formula, and the OG keeps it. The suede toe is not decoration: it is abrasion protection in the place a footballer wears through first, which is the same functional instinct that put a rubber shell toe on the Superstar in 1969 to protect players' feet under the basket. The Three Stripes are stitched through the sidewall rather than printed on, so they hold the panels together, which is how adidas has used the mark since buying it from Karhu Sports in 1952. The sole is thin and flat with almost no stack, so ground feel is direct. Cream overlays on a black upper will patina rather than stay pristine.
