Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 4 October 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in White/Light Smoke Grey/Sail/Tour Yellow. Switch is one of Jordan Brand's structural experiments on its founding silhouette, and Light Smoke Grey is the palette that lets you see the engineering rather than the colour. The line has form here: Nike Air arrived on the Air Jordan II, elephant print on the III, patent leather on the XI, carbon fibre shanks and Kevlar reinforcement later, Flyknit from the XXX and a laceless FastFit system on the XXXIII. Modifying how a shoe closes or how it is put together is not a departure for this brand, it is a habit. Applying that habit to the Air Jordan 1 High is the most attention grabbing version of it.
Pale grey is a blank canvas, so let the outfit carry the colour. Black or navy trousers with a knit in any strong shade will work, since light grey argues with almost nothing. The second recipe is full neutral: grey sweatpants, a white tee, a black jacket, letting the shoe's construction be the only interesting texture. Keep hems above the collar so the High cut is visible. This is a dry weather shoe. Protect before first wear, clean regularly rather than heavily, and store boxed away from sunlight, since pale greys pick up a yellow cast over time and no cleaner reverses it.
Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997 with its own designers and its own release calendar, and that is what funds experiments on a silhouette that already sells perfectly well unmodified. The brand's fashion credibility comes from outside partners including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, all of whom treated deconstruction of these shoes as a legitimate design act. In house builds like Switch are the brand answering that conversation itself. Light grey is the right colour for it: neutral enough that nobody is distracted from what the shoe is actually doing.
Buy this one having looked at it properly, because the Switch designation points at a build change rather than a colour change and the details are what you are paying for. The underlying High profile gives ankle coverage and the familiar tall proportion. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the Air Jordan II. Light Smoke Grey is a pale, low saturation tone, which is the honest downside: it shows creasing across the toe box, dirt at the midsole join and scuffing on any exposed edge far more readily than a dark pair. Brush dry before any liquid, use mild soap sparingly, and keep a shoe tree in to control the crease.
