Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 July 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Fossil Stone/Fossil Rose/Psychic Purple/White. The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that started everything, designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore after Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie in October 1984 and gambled on a young player rather than an established star. The initial 50,000 pairs sold out and the model went on to pass 150 million dollars in sales, past anything Nike had projected. Zoom Comfort is what happens when that 1985 shape is rebuilt for people who walk on concrete instead of playing on hardwood. Fossil Stone takes the silhouette away from the Chicago red and black palette entirely, into a dusty neutral that behaves like a natural material. It is the High you wear when you want the outline without the flag.
Utility
Fossil Stone wants earth tones around it. Recipe one: ecru straight leg denim with a slight stack, a chocolate brown chore jacket, and a cream tee, so the shoe finishes a warm column instead of interrupting it. Recipe two: olive fatigue trousers cuffed once, a heather grey hoodie, and a black cap, where the sand upper stops the outfit going military. Crew socks in cream or bone, never white, since bright white makes the upper look dirty by comparison. Wear it laced through every eyelet for travel days and long walks, since that is what the Zoom Comfort build is for. The 1 carries the Banned campaign, which was built on the NBA's uniform rule requiring shoes at least 51 percent white and on Nike paying the fine rather than redesigning. That taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and the lesson never wore off. The 1 is also the shoe that turned collecting into a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale economy the model anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Spike Lee directed the earliest advertising and played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, which pushed the shoe into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put it into records.
Construction
The High cut is the whole argument here: a collar that sits above the ankle bone, a Wings mark at the top of the panel, and a lacing run long enough that you can dial the fit from loose at the top to tight at the arch. Zoom Comfort in the name signals the shoe has been rebuilt around cushioning underfoot rather than left at its 1985 spec, which is what makes it a full day shoe. Fossil Stone is a low chroma sand, so scuffing shows sooner than it would on black. Lace it fully if you want the collar to hold, or leave the top two rows loose for the relaxed silhouette the High is usually worn with.
