Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 January 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in White Onyx/Cardinal Red/Black. Zoom Comfort is what happens when the brand stops pretending the 1 is a performance shoe and starts engineering it as a daily one. The line has never been shy about technology: Nike Air entered from the Air Jordan II, carbon fibre shank plates and Kevlar reinforcement arrived on later models, Flyknit uppers from the XXX onward and a laceless FastFit system on the XXXIII. Applying modern cushioning to the original 1985 silhouette is that same instinct pointed backwards. Pumpkin Spice puts it in a warm burnt orange and cream palette, an autumn colour rather than a team one, which suits a shoe designed for walking rather than jumping.
Burnt orange belongs to autumn dressing. Brown or chocolate corduroy trousers with a cream knit gives the shoe a season appropriate home. The second option is stone chinos with a dark green overshirt, which lets the orange read as warm rather than loud. Avoid red and avoid mustard, both of which sit too close and muddy the tone. The high cut and the cushioned build make this the pair to wear on long days on foot, which is what it was built for. Clean with foam and a soft brush, condition the leather before winter, and dry slowly indoors so the upper does not stiffen.
Jordan Brand has always used engineering as identity rather than as fine print: the Air unit from the II, carbon fibre for torsional stiffness, Kevlar reinforced laces and uppers on the XV, Flyknit from the XXX and the laceless XXXIII. Those were basketball answers to basketball problems. Retrofitting cushioning into a heritage silhouette answers a different problem, which is that most people who buy Jordans now walk in them. It is the clearest sign of how completely the brand's audience has shifted from the court to the street since it became a standalone Nike division in 1997.
The Zoom Comfort build inserts a modern cushioning unit under the classic 1 upper, which is the entire reason this version exists: the silhouette stays, the ride changes. The high cut keeps the ankle collar and full lace run of the original shape, with burnt orange working across the overlays against a lighter base. Style code CT0978 200. No stack heights, unit dimensions or material weights are published, so the presence of the cushioning system and the colour block are all that should be asserted. In wear, expect a fuller, softer footbed than a standard Retro High, which also means the shoe sits slightly higher off the ground.
