    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 March 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Gym Red/Black/White. Banned is a name that refers to an advertising campaign, and the campaign is more interesting than the myth built on top of it. The NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, with a 5,000 dollar per game fine attached, and the shoe the league actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released on 1 April 1985. Nike paid rather than redesigned and turned the penalty into marketing. This Low carries the black and red palette that story attached itself to, on the pattern Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore in 1984, cut down for daily wear.
Two ways to wear it. First, hard and plain: black straight leg jeans, a black tee, and the red as the only colour anywhere on you. Second, break it up: raw indigo denim with a white tee and a black jacket, so the red accent lands twice, at the shoe and nowhere else. This is a night and evening palette, well suited to gigs, bars and travel and less to bright daytime fits. Wipe black leather with a damp cloth after wet days, condition once a season so it does not go grey, brush the midsole rather than bleaching it, and store with paper in the toe.
The Banned campaign taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and that lesson never stopped paying. It ran alongside Nike advertising that Spike Lee directed and starred in as Mars Blackmon, which gave the shoe a film language, while 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan into records. The result was sneaker collecting as a mass activity: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market has been valued near 2 billion dollars. The story has a darker side too, since in the late 1980s the shoes were associated with robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them outright.
Standard 1 Low anatomy: leather panels across toe, quarter and heel, a stitched Swoosh through the midfoot, a low padded collar, foam midsole and flat rubber outsole. There is no Air unit, because Air cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II onward, so the feel is firm and court flat, which is what makes this silhouette sit so cleanly under a trouser. Black and red is the most practical combination in the line for daily use, since scuffs on black read as grey rather than as bright damage and can usually be wiped out. Expect the leather to soften and crease across the toe within a few weeks of regular wear.
