Air Jordan 1 Retro Low Bordeaux
Air Jordan 1 Retro Low Bordeaux

Origin
Bordeaux is a wine colour applied to a basketball shoe, and the Air Jordan 1 Retro Low is the right place to try it. Deep muted red sits adjacent to the Chicago palette Jordan Brand uses as its own identity without ever committing to it, so the shoe carries the family resemblance while behaving like something you would wear to dinner. The AJ1 arrived publicly on 1 April 1985 from Peter Moore's drawing, and the Low is the cut that let the model escape the court entirely. In Bordeaux the panelling reads as tailoring: the Swoosh becomes a shape rather than a logo, and the whole shoe loses the sports equipment tone that a brighter red would insist on.
Utility
Recipe one, grown up: grey wool trousers with a cropped hem, a navy knit, a camel coat, and the Bordeaux reading as a burgundy accessory rather than a sneaker. Recipe two, casual: dark indigo jeans, white tee, black leather jacket, letting the wine tone soften an otherwise hard outfit. It sits comfortably with brown leather goods, which most red sneakers cannot claim. Lows want an ankle showing or a clean cuff. Fit is true with a narrow forefoot. These are the pair to reach for when the weather is uncertain, since the colour survives a light drizzle better than anything white in the line.
Influence
By 2022 Jordan Brand generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing back to Michael Jordan himself under the royalty clause built into his original 1984 contract, an unusual term at the time and the reason the deal is still studied. Volume like that depends on shoes exactly like this one: a familiar silhouette in a colour nobody has to explain. Bordeaux is not a grail and does not pretend to be. It is the AJ1 doing the everyday work that funds the collaborations, the athlete roster and the football sponsorships the brand is better known for.
Construction
Leather over a rubber cupsole, low collar, stitched Swoosh, no ankle padding to break in. Bordeaux is one of the easier finishes to live with because deep saturated colour conceals the scuffs that ruin white and light tones, and it does not show the grey pavement haze that pale leather picks up within a week. The white midsole is the part that dates. Clean the sidewall with a soft eraser or a dedicated foam and leave solvents alone, since they strip the paint edge where midsole meets upper. Condition the leather a couple of times a year to keep the toe flex point supple. Let them air dry away from radiators, because forced heat is what cracks cupsole adhesive.
