Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 October 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Fire Red/White. Fire Red is one of the palettes that make the Air Jordan line readable without a logo. Red, black and white have functioned as brand colours in themselves since the Chicago years, and Fire Red is the brightest, most direct version of that red: hot rather than deep, closer to a warning light than to burgundy. On the Low, the ankle disappears and the colour has to work across a smaller canvas, so it lands harder. The original 1 was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore and sold out its initial 50,000 pairs on the way past 150 million dollars in sales, far beyond the roughly 3 million over three years Nike had planned for.
Red at the foot is a full stop, so keep the rest quiet. Indigo denim, a white tee and a navy or black overshirt lets the shoe finish the outfit. Alternatively try all grey, a grey sweat set or grey trousers with a marl crew, so the red is the only saturated thing in view. Never add a second red garment: matching reds across fabrics almost never works and the mismatch is what people see first. The low cut suits heat and city walking. Clean the white leather promptly with foam, keep bleach based products away from the red, and store it out of windows so the colour holds.
Air Jordan reached culture through basketball colliding with hip hop, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers in their records. Red is the colour that carried across that crossover, because it was the colour of the team, the advertising and the arguments. Nike's willingness to build a campaign around a league uniform rule instead of redesigning a shoe taught the market that transgression sells, and red became the visual shorthand for that attitude. A red and white Low is the everyday, wearable descendant of that period, stripped of the drama but still speaking the same language.
White leather forms the base with fire red taking the overlays, the Swoosh and the collar area, following the panel seams of the original so the block reads clean rather than sprayed on. The low cut has no padded ankle collar, so the shoe flexes with the foot and packs flat, which is a genuine advantage over the High for daily wear. The Jumpman handles branding. No style code accompanies this listing and no material specifications are published, so read the visible construction as the spec. Bright reds are the most fade prone pigment on a leather upper, so long exposure to direct sun will dull this pair faster than it dulls a black or grey one.
