Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Palomino/White/Wild Berry. Palomino and Wild Berry is a tan and a deep pink red, a pairing that belongs to fashion rather than to sport. The Air Jordan 1 can carry it because the shape has spent decades being reinterpreted by people outside basketball, most consequentially by Virgil Abloh, whose Off-White work took the silhouette apart and showed the market that the pattern itself could be treated as raw material. After that, an unexpected two colour Low is barely a provocation. The panels are still Peter Moore's, unchanged since the first production run for Jordan on 17 November 1984, only now they are being coloured like a jacket.
Two recipes. Warm layering: brown or ecru trousers with a burgundy knit, so both shoe colours find a partner and the outfit reads as one palette. Or minimal: black straight jeans and a plain white tee, where the tan softens the black and the berry supplies the only saturation. Avoid orange, which flattens both tones. Lows want the hem at the ankle. Sizing is close to true, half up for wide feet. Protect the tan before first wear since it stains rather than scuffs, clean the berry panels separately, and keep them out of heavy rain. A cream sock ties the tan and the berry together at the ankle.
Virgil Abloh's Off-White collaboration is the clearest case of the Air Jordan 1 being treated as a design object rather than a shoe. It sits in a programme that also includes Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, and between them they moved the silhouette from sportswear into a category with no obvious name. Palomino and Wild Berry is an in house descendant of that shift: a colourway built from a fashion palette, released on a basketball pattern, with no explanation offered. The shoe assumes you already understand why a tan and berry Low makes sense, and by now most people do.
Leather panels in palomino tan with wild berry on the Swoosh, collar line and heel, over the flat stitched rubber cupsole. Warm neutrals paired with a saturated accent are one of the easier combinations to keep clean, because the tan hides everyday dust while the berry panels are small enough to wipe individually. The low cut keeps the shoe light through a long day standing. There is no technology under the upper, just leather over rubber, and after four decades that remains the argument: this shoe is a set of proportions, and every colourway is a test of how much they can carry.
