Culture Note™
Black and Fire Red is the palette Jordan Brand treats as its own, drawn straight from the Chicago Bulls kit that Michael Jordan wore as a rookie after signing with Nike on 26 October 1984. The Air Jordan 1 that Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore released to the public on 1 April 1985 and sold out its first 50,000 pairs, and the red, black and white combination has functioned as a brand colour ever since, alongside the number 23. This is the grade school cut of the Mid, built on the same last and panel pattern as the adult version at smaller sizing. In black with Fire Red accents it is the most direct statement of house colours the Mid offers.
Two routes. School run first: black or indigo straight jeans, a plain white tee, and a red or black zip hoodie so the accent colour repeats once at the top of the body. Second, court adjacent: black mesh shorts, a black tee, and mid crew white socks so the collar break is clean and the Fire Red panels read as trim. Grade school sizing runs small against adult numbering, so check the length before you commit and leave a thumb of growing room if this is for a kid still growing. Wipe the black leather with a damp cloth after wear, keep the midsole white with a soft brush rather than a harsh cleaner, and unlace fully before deep cleaning.
The red and black pairing is bound up with the Banned campaign, and it is worth getting the story right: the NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built advertising around it instead of redesigning. That advertising also gave the line its first film language, with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried Jordan and his sneakers into music. A black and Fire Red pair is where all of that sits most plainly.
A leather upper in black with Fire Red on the Swoosh and collar area, perforated toe box, padded collar with the Wings logo, and a rubber cupsole underneath. Because it is a grade school make-up, the proportions are scaled rather than redesigned, so the shape reads the same on the shelf and on foot. Black leather is the most forgiving finish this pattern comes in: creasing across the toe flex point stays low contrast, scuffs disappear with a wipe, and the red accents keep their saturation longer than a light panel would keep its brightness. Lace the top eyelets loosely if you want the collar to sit open, which is how most people wear the Mid.
