Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 2 October 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a velvet upper in Purple Smoke/Purple Smoke/White. Velvet is a word from a different industry, and that is the point. The Air Jordan 1 was built as basketball equipment for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, and it spent its first decade being judged on court. The brand's own history of material borrowing began when patent leather, a formal wear surface, arrived on the Air Jordan XI. Purple velvet on a Mid continues that habit at a lower price point: a napped, light absorbing finish in a colour that has never had anything to do with Chicago red, black and white. It is the Jordan 1 dressed for a night out rather than a game.
Treat it like a dress shoe with a rubber sole. Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a black knit, a dark overcoat, so the texture is the only thing doing work. Recipe two: dark denim, a cream silk or satin shirt, a black jacket, playing two different light behaviours against each other. Avoid daylight heavy days and avoid rain entirely: this finish is an evening proposition. Mids want a hem at the collar. Brush the nap in one direction with a soft brush after each wear, never soak it, and use a dedicated protector spray before the first outing rather than after the first stain.
Textured and tonal Jordans belong to the era when the brand became a music industry object as much as a sports one. Jordan Brand's artist collaborators include Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj, alongside Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work on the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, and that roster is why a purple velvet finish reads as stagewear rather than sportswear. The connection between the shoe and music runs back to the beginning, when 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers in verses long before any formal partnership existed. This colourway is what that relationship looks like once it becomes product.
Velvet style surfaces change how a shoe reads more than how it performs. The nap catches light in one direction and absorbs it in the other, so the same purple looks two different shades depending on which way you brushed it, and panel edges soften instead of cutting sharply. The Mid cut wraps the ankle below the height of the original high top, keeping the textured area contained. This kind of finish is the least weather tolerant option in footwear: water marks it, salt stains it and abrasion flattens the nap permanently. Jordan Brand publishes no material sheet per colourway, so confirm exactly which panels carry the texture before planning how to wear them.
