Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Light Orewood Brown/Tech Grey/Sail. Craft is Jordan Brand's label for pairs where the material treatment is the story rather than the colour, and Tech Grey is about as neutral a base as the brand issues. Put them together on an Air Jordan 1 Mid and you get a shoe designed to be looked at closely instead of recognised from across the street. That is a real departure. This silhouette was drawn by Peter Moore for a Bulls rookie and released on 1 April 1985 in colours built to be seen from the upper tiers of a stadium. Grey with a texture led finish is the same outline aimed at a completely different kind of attention.
Grey is a base layer, not a feature, so use it that way. Black tailored trousers, a grey marl crew and a black overshirt gives you a fully neutral fit where the shoe's texture is the only detail. The second recipe brings colour above the waist: olive or rust knitwear, indigo denim, the grey keeping the bottom half calm. This is the pair to wear when the rest of the outfit is doing the talking. Mid cut cuffs well. Brush the texture dry after each wear, use minimal water, and avoid strong cleaners entirely, since aggressive chemicals flatten a textured finish and it does not come back.
Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997, and that is what made programmes like Craft possible: a division with its own designers and its own release calendar can afford to make a grey shoe with no team reference and no athlete tie in. The brand's credibility for material work comes from its collaborators, with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS all having taken passes at these silhouettes. Craft is the in house version of that instinct. It sells to the part of the audience that already owns the loud pairs and now wants the shoe as an object rather than a signal.
On a Craft build the pattern is unchanged and the surface is what shifts, so read this shoe by hand rather than by photograph. Tech Grey removes contrast between panels, which pushes texture and stitching to the front of the eye and makes the Mid's collar fold and toe box shape more visible than usual. Nike Air cushioning has been part of this line since the Air Jordan II, and the Mid gives more ankle coverage than a Low without the High's wrap. Textured finishes need dry brushing before anything wet, and they mark differently from smooth leather: dirt sits in the grain rather than on the surface, so clean regularly rather than aggressively.
