Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 21 March 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black-University Red. Chicago is the colour story the whole line is built on. Red, black and white are the Bulls colours Michael Jordan played in, and they function as this brand's own palette alongside the number 23. A white based Chicago on the mid cut 1 gives you that scheme with the white weighted forward, which is closer to what the league's uniform policy of the era actually wanted: shoes at least 51 percent white, enforced with a 5,000 dollar per game fine that Nike chose to pay rather than redesign. The original pattern underneath, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, is unchanged. What you are buying is the most quoted colour combination in sneakers, arranged the calmer way round.
Because the palette is so loaded, keep the styling literal and simple. Raw indigo jeans, a white tee and a black bomber lets the shoe carry the red on its own. The second route is a full neutral fit: grey sweatpants and a grey hoodie, so the red overlays are the only colour anywhere. Do not introduce a second red garment, since the scheme reads as costume the moment you repeat it twice. Mid cut wants the hem finishing just above the collar. Care is the usual white leather routine: damp cloth after wear, soft brush at the perforations, separate cloth for the red, and no soaking, because red can shadow onto white once wet.
No sneaker colourway has been referenced more. The line reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop, with rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z writing Jordans into their music, while Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising put the shoe into film language. The result is a red, black and white scheme that people recognise without knowing the model number. It is also the palette the resale market values most highly, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the wider market this shoe anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Wearing it means accepting that everyone will read it correctly.
The mid cut collar covers the ankle bone without reaching the height of the OG high, so the shoe gives more hold than a low with less bulk than a high. The upper is panelled leather with a perforated toe box, stitched rather than bonded, sitting on a rubber cupsole with no visible cushioning window. With white leading, the red overlays sit on the quarters and swoosh where they read from distance, and black anchors the collar and heel. White leather is the maintenance cost here: it creases visibly at the toe and picks up transfer from raw denim. The fit is the standard 1 profile, close over the instep with a full toe box, and it firms up rather than softens underfoot.
