Culture Note™
The Retro High OG is the 1 in its original proportions, the cut Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew when Nike had lost basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own. The deal signed on 26 October 1984 gave Michael Jordan royalties, unusual then, and the shoe that followed sold out 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars against a 3 million dollar projection. Bleached Coral takes that shape somewhere the 1985 palette never went: a washed out warm pink that reads as sun faded rather than loud. It works because the High OG silhouette is so fixed in memory that any colour laid over it becomes a comment on the original. Coral is the softest version of that argument.
Coral wants either full contrast or full agreement. First recipe: bone or ecru wide leg trousers, a white ribbed tank, cropped outer layer, so the shoe carries all the warmth in the outfit. Second: black straight jeans and a black tee, coral as the only break in the column, which is the easiest way to wear a pale colour without it looking accidental. It is a daytime shoe: markets, dinners, travel, not rain and not a long night on a dance floor. Lace it high and snug if you want the ankle supported, or leave the top eyelets open for the classic slouch. Protect the pale leather with a spray before first wear, clean spills immediately, and store it away from sunlight so the coral does not bleach further.
Nike's Spike Lee directed campaigns, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, gave the High its screen life, and the Banned advertising built around the league's uniform rule taught the sneaker market that transgression sells. The 1 anchors a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars. Pastel and washed colourways sit at the other end of that market from the archive grails: they are bought to be worn, and they are where the High stopped being a men's basketball object and became a shared silhouette. Coral is the version of the shoe that never had to be a sneaker story to work.
Leather panels stitched over one another give the High its structure, and the high collar is the part that matters: it can be laced tight for support or left loose so the ankle folds down, which is how most people actually wear it. The Wings logo sits at the collar as the mark of the earliest era, before the Jumpman became the house signature on later models. The outsole is rubber with the pivot circle at the forefoot. Bleached Coral is a pale finish, so it will pick up dirt at the toe and along the midsole edge sooner than a dark pair, and the leather will crease into a personal pattern within a few wears. Expect it to soften rather than stay pristine.
