Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 19 November 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Varsity Red/Black/Sail/Muslin. Chicago red, black and white function as brand colours in their own right, the same way the number 23 does. They come from the team the rookie signed to Nike was playing for in October 1984, on a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars, roughly three times any other contract in the league. The Jumpman itself was made in that uniform: Peter Moore had Jordan recreate a pose from a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Olympics, in Bulls gear, and that silhouette became the house mark. A Lost and Found execution treats the colourway as an artefact rather than a new release, which is why this grade school pair looks like it has already had a life.
Recipe one: dark indigo jeans with a white tee and a black varsity jacket, letting the red on the shoe answer any trim on the outerwear. Recipe two: black track pants with a red hoodie and a black gilet, a school and weekend fit that leans into the palette rather than balancing it. This is a daily shoe for a younger wearer with more ankle coverage than a low. Buy with a small amount of growing room only, since a loose high top rolls at the heel. Clean aged finishes very gently, since scrubbing will strip the intentional tone, keep them out of direct heat, and store cool and dry, because ageing midsole materials degrade over time.
The Air Jordan 1 released publicly on 1 April 1985 after debuting for Jordan on 17 November 1984, and its initial 50,000 pairs sold out, taking the shoe past 150 million dollars in sales against a Nike target of about 3 million over three years. Everything the collecting world became grew from that gap between expectation and outcome. Chicago is the colourway that gets re released most often because it is the one carrying the founding story, and an aged treatment is the brand acknowledging that the story itself is now the product.
The Retro High OG holds the original geometry: separate leather panels for toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel, stitched over one another on a foam midsole, a rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle, and the Wings logo on the tall collar. A vintage styled execution uses aged tones and yellowed finishes to imply age, which means the shoe arrives looking worn in without being worn in. The leather is still new and still stiff. Grade school pairs use a smaller last but the same panel layout and collar height, so they sit correctly next to adult versions. Lace the top eyelets loosely for the first couple of weeks while the collar softens.
