Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 August 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Sail/Starfish. Some Air Jordan colourways are named after materials and some after teams. Shattered Backboard is named after a piece of lore, and the name has outgrown whatever it originally described: it now simply means this orange, black and sail arrangement, understood instantly by anyone who follows the line. That is a specific kind of cultural achievement, a palette that functions as a proper noun. On a Retro High OG in grade school sizing, it arrives at the audience that inherits these references rather than the one that formed them. The underlying shoe is still Peter Moore's 1984 design, the model that sold out its initial 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars in sales.
Recipe one: black jeans with a plain black hoodie, so the orange panels are the only colour anywhere in the fit. Recipe two: grey sweatpants with a sail coloured crewneck and a black gilet, pulling the off white on the shoe up into the top half. This is a daily shoe for a younger wearer, with the high collar giving more ankle coverage than a low. Buy with a small amount of growing room only, since a loose high top rolls at the heel. Clean sail panels early and gently with mild soap and a soft brush, keep them out of direct heat while drying to slow yellowing, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials break down over time.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale market the model anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars with several billion more projected. Named colourways are the currency of that market, because they let a shoe be discussed without a style code. The line's cultural carriers were hip hop and film as much as basketball: 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers, and Spike Lee played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan in Nike's advertising.
The Retro High OG keeps the original arrangement of separate leather panels, toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel, stitched over one another on a foam midsole, with a rubber outsole carrying the pivot circle at the forefoot and the Wings logo on the tall collar. Orange against sail is a high contrast pairing, so the panel edges read hard and the shoe looks graphic from a distance. Sail is an off white, which means it will not stay pristine and is not meant to. Grade school pairs use a smaller last but the same layout and collar height. A high top always needs breaking in: lace the top eyelets loosely for the first fortnight.
