Designed by Peter Moore and released on 13 January 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Yellow Ochre/Black/Sail. This is the OG cut, the one Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, in grade school sizing. That matters more than it sounds: the Air Jordan 1 High OG is the shape that sold out 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars when Nike had modestly planned for about 3 million dollars over three years, and the GS run is how the shape reaches people who were not born anywhere near that. Yellow Ochre is an earth pigment, older than any of this, and it lands on the 1 as a warm mustard that sidesteps the usual red and black argument. It is a heritage silhouette wearing a colour that has nothing to prove, which is why it works.
Ochre is a warm neutral, so build warm around it. First: dark brown corduroy trousers, a cream heavyweight tee and a navy overshirt, which makes the shoe look chosen rather than loud. Second: black denim with a charcoal hoodie, where the mustard becomes the single point of colour in an otherwise grey outfit. Highs want a hem that stops above the collar, cuff once if you have to. Lace over the top eyelet loosely, or leave the top pair open, the classic way this shoe has been worn since it was new. Brush dust off before it embeds, spot clean with foam rather than soaking, and keep a shoe tree in them so the collar does not fold inward in storage.
The Wings logo, a basketball with wings, is the mark of the line's first era, and the High OG is the shoe that carries it. The 1 earned its cultural weight through the Banned advertising, which was built on the NBA's 51 percent white shoe rule and Nike's willingness to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine, and through hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan and his sneakers into their records. Collaborators from Off-White under Virgil Abloh to Travis Scott, Supreme, KAWS and Comme des Garcons have all returned to this exact outline, which is why an unusual colour on it still reads instantly.
Ochre is an unforgiving colour on leather because it shows every mark and every uneven break. Expect the panels to crease along the flex point early, which on a 1 is part of how the shoe ages rather than a fault. This is the OG High construction: full collar height, the Wings logo that marks the earliest era of the line, and a lace set long enough that how you lace it changes the stance of the whole shoe. Nike has not published the material split or any measurement for this pair, so ignore spec sheet claims. GS sizing runs to a different last than adult sizing, so try before committing if you are sizing up from a men's number, and expect a slightly narrower fit through the midfoot.
