    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 30 April 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Track Red-Black. Track Red is a warmer, more orange leaning red than the Chicago tone people expect on an Air Jordan 1, and choosing it is a small act of precision. The silhouette is the original: Peter Moore drew it with Bruce Kilgore for a Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 on a six year, 2.5 million dollar deal that unusually paid him a royalty on sales, and it reached the public on 1 April 1985 against an internal target of about 3 million dollars over three years. It passed 150 million. Retro High OG means the original pattern, and a shifted red is how the brand keeps that pattern interesting.
Two ways to wear it. First, warm neutral: cream or sand wide trousers with a brown knit, where Track Red sits in the same temperature family and the fit reads considered rather than sporty. Second, plain contrast: black straight jeans with a white tee, letting the red be the only saturated thing you own that day. High tops require a hem decision, so break the trouser cleanly on the collar or crop above it. Wipe red leather dry immediately if it gets wet, brush the midsole rather than bleaching it, and store with paper in the toe away from sunlight.
The royalty Jordan negotiated in 1984 is the detail that explains why this shoe still matters commercially: Jordan Brand generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike in 2022, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan under that original arrangement. The culture that made those numbers possible came from Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising, from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting Jordan into records, and from a resale economy valued around 2 billion dollars, with original 1985 pairs trading near 20,000 dollars on StockX. A red High OG is the shape all of that money moves through.
OG spec is the original panel layout: leather across toe, quarter and heel, a stitched Swoosh through the midfoot, a padded high collar, foam midsole and flat rubber outsole. Air cushioning did not enter the line until the Air Jordan II, so the ride is firm and flat and the leather does the shaping, softening around your foot over the first weeks. Track Red sits warmer than a true gym red, which changes what it pairs with: it goes with browns, creams and washed denim more easily than with cool greys and blacks. Reds fade unevenly in sunlight, so condition the leather seasonally and store the pair out of daylight.
