Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 March 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Obsidian/University Blue/Sail. Nike signed Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984, a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars, roughly three times any other contract in the league at the time, with a royalty on sales attached. Peter Moore, working with Bruce Kilgore, drew the shoe that followed, and it reached the public on 1 April 1985. This low cut OG in grade school sizing keeps that original pattern and trades the Chicago red, black and white for obsidian navy and university blue, the colours of North Carolina, where Jordan played his college basketball and where Jordan Brand still outfits the programme. You are wearing the first chapter of the line told in someone else's palette: a Chicago shoe carrying a Tar Heel memory, cut low so the whole silhouette sits closer to the ground.
Two ways to run it. First, straight sportswear: cropped navy sweat shorts, a heavy white tee, ribbed crew socks pulled just above the collar so the low cut reads deliberate rather than accidental. Second, cleaner: mid blue straight leg denim with a short break, a white oxford shirt worn open over a tee, no visible sock. University blue is a loud accent, so let it be the only bright thing in the outfit. Low cuts suit warm weather, long days on foot and anywhere a high top would feel like too much declaration. Sizing on grade school pairs runs to youth measurements, so convert carefully before you commit. Keep the white midsole off wet clay, brush the panels dry, and store them out of direct sun.
North Carolina is Jordan's own university and one of the college basketball programmes Jordan Brand outfits, alongside Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan, so a UNC palette on the first silhouette is the line closing a loop on itself. The Air Jordan 1 is also the shoe that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale market this model anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Nike's earliest advertising, directed by Spike Lee with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shoe into film language before hip hop carried it further, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all name checking Jordan in their music.
OG here means the pattern follows the original rather than a modern reinterpretation, so the panelling, the lace bed and the way the swoosh sits proud of the quarter all read as 1985 geometry. Cut low, there is no high collar to carry the Wings logo that marked the line's earliest era, which shifts the visual weight down onto the toe box and the swoosh. Obsidian navy takes the heavier overlays, university blue lifts the accents, white keeps the midsole and base calm. Grade school sizing is a scaled version of the same build, not a simplified one. Jordan Brand does not publish a full material breakdown per colourway, so check panel finish and lining in hand rather than assuming it matches another release.
