Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 January 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Photon Dust/Barely Green/Summit White. The Air Jordan 1 is the whole line's first sentence. Peter Moore drew it with Bruce Kilgore for a Bulls rookie Nike had signed in October 1984, it reached the public on 1 April 1985, and the initial 50,000 pairs sold out on the way past 150 million dollars in sales. Nike had budgeted for roughly 3 million over three years. The Low OG returns to that first pattern with the collar cut down, and the Wings logo that marked the earliest era of the line still belongs to this silhouette. Year of the Snake is a Lunar New Year edition built in a grade school size run, which means the founding shape arrives carrying a calendar story rather than a Chicago one. The origin, sized for younger feet.
Two ways to wear it. First, plain: straight leg dark denim breaking just above the collar, a heavyweight white tee, and the Lunar New Year detailing left to carry the outfit alone. Second, sport: black or grey fleece shorts with crew socks pulled to mid calf, an oversized crewneck, and the low collar reading clean against the ankle. Because this is a grade school run, check the size conversion before committing, since GS is narrower through the midfoot than the adult pattern. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth and a soft brush rather than soaking it, keep it out of a machine, and stuff the toe box in storage so the panels do not collapse into a permanent crease.
The 1 is the shoe that turned sneakers into a collecting culture. Nike's earliest advertising put it into film language with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z name checked Jordan and his sneakers on record. The Banned campaign, built on the NBA rule that shoes be at least 51 percent white and on Nike's willingness to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine, taught the market that transgression sells. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale economy the model anchors has been valued near 2 billion dollars. A Lunar New Year Low sits inside all of that, aimed at the next set of feet.
Read it as an OG build: panelled leather across toe, quarter and heel, a stitched Swoosh over the midfoot, a padded collar cut low, and a foam midsole on a flat rubber outsole. Air cushioning did not enter the line until the Air Jordan II, so what you get here is court flat and firm underfoot, with the leather doing the shaping. That is why the 1 breaks in rather than cushioning you: the panels soften, the toe box creases into your foot, and the shoe settles into a fit that is yours. Grade school sizing keeps the same pattern at a smaller scale and runs a touch slimmer through the midfoot. If you like a low, honest profile with nothing pod shaped under the heel, this is it.
