Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 January 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Oil Green/Metallic Gold Grain/Saturn Gold/Cedar. Year of the Dragon is the loudest animal in the Lunar cycle, and Jordan Brand puts it on the shape that can carry loud without collapsing: the Air Jordan 1 Low OG, built to the original pattern that Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984. OG matters in the name because it signals the older panel layout and proportions rather than a modern lifestyle reworking. This is a grade school run, which is where the brand tends to be most adventurous, because the audience is not buying a memory. The dragon story is aimed at people who were not alive for any of the history it sits on top of.
Two ways to wear it. First, let the theme lead: black or deep red track pants with a plain black tee, so the dragon detailing is the only decorative thing in view. Second, understate it: light wash denim with a white crew and low socks, which turns the graphics into a detail people find rather than a statement they receive. This is an everyday shoe for school, weekends and travel, not a court shoe. Wipe leather with a damp cloth, brush the midsole, keep any printed or textured panels away from harsh cleaners, and store with paper in the toe so the low collar does not fold in on itself.
The 1 is the shoe that created sneaker collecting as a mass activity. Spike Lee, directing and appearing as Mars Blackmon in Nike's earliest Air Jordan advertising, gave it a film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put it into music. The resale market it anchors has been valued around 2 billion dollars, with original 1985 pairs trading near 20,000 dollars on StockX. A Lunar New Year edition is the modern version of that same instinct: give the silhouette a story people already care about, and let the shoe carry it. The shape has never needed help being recognised.
OG spec on a Low means the original panelling: leather sections across the toe, quarter and heel, a stitched Swoosh through the midfoot, a low padded collar, a foam midsole and a flat rubber outsole. No Air unit, because Air cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II onward, so the ride is deliberately firm and close to the ground. A themed colourway usually concentrates its detailing on the collar, tongue and heel, which is where a Low shows least, so this rewards being looked at up close. Grade school lasts run slimmer through the midfoot than adult ones, so size carefully and break them in over short wears.
