Black toe is one of the oldest codes in the line, a colour split from the shoe's first year, when Peter Moore's panels were being coloured to sit inside and outside the NBA's uniform rules. This women's Low keeps the split and changes the material, running velvet where leather usually goes. The move has a clear precedent: the Air Jordan XI put patent leather on a basketball court, brought formal wear material into performance sport, and is the reason that model still gets worn with suits. A velvet black toe Low is the same idea at ankle height, built for an evening rather than a court.
Two recipes. Evening: a black slip dress or black tailored trousers, sheer or black socks, silver jewellery, the velvet reading as a texture partner to satin or silk above it. Or downplay it: dark straight jeans, a heavy black knit, and the shoe as the only soft surface in a hard outfit. Velvet wants a short hem to be visible at all. Sizing is close to true, and velvet gives less than leather across the toe, so a half size up suits a wide foot. Brush with a soft nap brush in one direction, never wet clean, and keep them off wet pavements entirely.
The Air Jordan 1 crossed into fashion long before anyone dressed it in velvet. Jordan Brand's collaborators include Dior, Comme des Garcons, Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Supreme and KAWS, and that programme is what made a basketball shoe legible in a room where nobody is playing basketball. In music the connection runs older still, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z writing the shoes into their records. A velvet finish is an in house version of the same crossing, no partner logo involved, just the material announcing where the shoe expects to spend its evening.
Velvet changes the shoe completely. The nap catches light differently depending on which way it is brushed, so the same pair looks lighter or deeper as you move, and the black toe split reads as two textures rather than two colours. The low collar and the flat rubber cupsole are unchanged, so the fit and the stance are the familiar ones. Velvet is far less forgiving than leather about water and salt, and it cannot be scrubbed. Treat this as a dry weather shoe and understand that the material is doing the talking while the construction quietly holds the shape it always has held.
