Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 March 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Navy/White. The 85 in the name points at the original pattern. The first shoe was produced for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and reached the public on 1 April 1985, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, and the 50,000 pair run sold out on the way past 150 million dollars in sales, far beyond the 3 million Nike had projected over three years. This Retro Low 85 takes that first pattern and cuts it low, keeping the older proportions rather than the modern Low's, with metallic blue over white leather in the vein of the earliest colour splits. It is the closest the Low gets to speaking in the line's founding accent.
Two recipes. Vintage sport: mid blue straight jeans, a white tee, a navy coach jacket, so the metallic blue sits inside a blue family rather than shouting alone. Or minimal: grey trousers with a white oxford shirt, the shoe as the only break at the floor. The 85 cut looks best with a hem that just kisses the collar. Sizing skews narrow, so wide feet should go a half size up, and a thicker sock helps the older toe shape settle. Clean the white leather with foam and a soft brush, wipe the metallic panels dry, and rotate wears so the flex crease develops slowly instead of in one hard fold.
This is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale market the model anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars with several billion more projected. Reissues in the old pattern aim straight at that memory. The line's cultural fuel was hip hop and Spike Lee's advertising, but its economic engine was scarcity, and a retro cut like this exists because the 1985 silhouette became a collectible object rather than sports equipment. Wearing the 85 pattern is a small piece of connoisseurship, legible only to people who know where the seams are supposed to sit.
White leather with metallic blue overlays on the Swoosh, collar and heel, built on the older tooling that gives the 85 pattern its squarer toe and different panel proportions. Vintage cut Air Jordan 1s fit differently to current Lows, generally narrower through the midfoot with a more upright toe box, so lacing looser through the middle eyelets helps a lot. The cupsole is stitched rubber, wide and flat. Metallic blue is a coated finish, so it dulls where the shoe flexes and holds its shine everywhere else, which over a year gives you a shoe that visibly maps the way you walk.
