Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 30 June 2021 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/White/White/University Blue. UV reactive is one of the few genuinely playful ideas Nike has put on the Air Force 1, a shoe so fixed in its shape that novelty has to come from material rather than design. Panels treated to shift colour under sunlight mean the pair you look at indoors is not the pair anyone sees outside, which turns a static silhouette into something with a state. LX marks the elevated material treatment and W the women's pattern. Style code DA8301 101. The base is white, which is the necessary starting point, because a reactive finish only reads if the shoe begins somewhere neutral enough for the change to be obvious.
A shoe that changes outdoors deserves to be worn outdoors. First: white or cream summer dressing, a linen shirt and light trousers, so the reactive shift is the only colour event in the outfit. Second: light wash denim and a plain white tee, the simplest possible frame, letting the panels do the talking when you step into the sun. It is a daytime and warm weather shoe by definition. Air Force 1s run about half a size large and women's patterns run narrow, so size down half unless your foot is wide. Clean with a mild leather cleaner and a soft cloth, avoid solvents and bleach on the treated panels, and store out of constant direct sun.
The Air Force 1 has spent four decades absorbing ideas from outside Nike, which is why it can carry a gimmick without losing status. From the 1980s onward the brand was a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and this model in particular became a staple of mainstream American youth dress before reappearing through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes. That history means the shoe is read as a classic first and a novelty second, so a colour changing pair comes across as wit rather than as a stunt. Nike has always had licence to experiment on the Air Force 1 because nobody, including Nike, can damage its reputation.
The Air Force 1 template is unchanged: a stitched leather upper with perforated toe panels, a padded collar, a thick midsole containing a sealed Nike Air unit, and the pivot circle on the outsole left over from basketball. Nike Air is pressurised gas inside the foam, which is why the shoe feels planted rather than springy. The LX treatment adds the reactive panels, and those are the parts that need care, since aggressive cleaners and prolonged heat can degrade a coated finish faster than ordinary wear. A women's last runs narrower through the heel with a lower instep. Sunlight is the feature here and also the thing that ages white leather and yellows a midsole.
