Designed by Peter Moore and released on 4 April 2020 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Blue Fury/Deep Royal/Blue Fury. The SB Dunk Low Pro is the working version of the silhouette, the one meant to be skated rather than displayed, and Blue Fury is a colourway that carries no narrative at all: a hard, saturated blue on a shape most people can identify from a photograph of the outsole. That plainness is a kind of statement in a line famous for themed releases. Nike's confidence in the Dunk comes from decades of the shape being handed between contexts, from court to street to skatepark, absorbing new meaning each time. When you strip the story out and leave one strong colour, you find out how much of the appeal was the silhouette all along.
Two builds. One, skate standard: loose jeans or twill trousers stacked on the collar, a heavy tee, low socks, the blue reading as the only colour in a dusty fit. Two, sharper: black tapered trousers, a white tee, a navy overshirt, where the blue links the top and the bottom. Practical for daily wear in a dry city and forgiving of the dust. Expect real wear at the toe and ollie area if you skate. Brush after each wear, clean the midsole edge with a soft block, swap laces when they shred, and dry naturally rather than near heat. Insoles pack down quickly with skating, so replace them periodically.
Nike's cultural weight was built on basketball, hip hop and advertising, and by the 1980s its shoes were status symbols in urban fashion before they were performance purchases. Nike SB borrowed that authority and had to earn it separately, sometimes badly: the line's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art produced an apology on 27 June 2005 and an out of court settlement. What stuck was the product. Skaters kept choosing SB Dunks because the padding and the board feel worked, and the market followed the skaters. A plain Pro colourway is the version that belongs to the people who actually use them.
Pro in an SB name signals the skate specification: padded tongue and collar for comfort under laces and impact, extra cushioning under the heel for landings, and a flat waffle style outsole that reads the board through the shoe. That outsole logic goes back to Bowerman's waffle iron experiments in the early 1970s, still the most useful thing Nike ever made for grip. Fit runs fuller than a general release Dunk because of the padding. A saturated blue upper hides scuffing better than white and shows dust less than black, which makes it one of the more practical SB colourways for daily use.
