Released on 18 September 2023 and part of the Romaleos line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Metallic Gold/Metallic Gold/White. The Romaleos is Nike's weightlifting shoe, and it belongs to a category most sneaker brands never bother with. A lifting shoe is not a training shoe with a stiffer sole, it is a piece of equipment with a raised, incompressible heel that changes the angles your ankles and hips can reach under a loaded bar. Nike has built these since it decided that strength sport deserved the same engineering attention it gave running and basketball. Black with Metallic Gold is the competition dress for it: black for the platform, gold for the medal reference that weightlifting has never been shy about. Style code CD3463 001 places this in the fourth generation, a long run for a specialist product with a small audience and very exacting users.
First recipe, in use: fitted shorts or lifting singlet with knee high socks, for squats, cleans, snatches and any session where you are actually loading the bar. The raised heel helps you keep an upright torso and reach depth, which is the entire reason to own them. Do not run, jump or do conditioning circuits in these, since the rigid sole is unforgiving on impact. Second recipe, gym floor: black joggers rolled at the ankle so the strap and heel stack are visible, since a lifting shoe should never be hidden under fabric that could catch. Fit snug with no internal movement, tighten the strap over the laces, and wipe the sole clean so chalk does not compromise grip.
Nike's cultural reach was built through basketball and running, but its credibility has always come from building real equipment for specific athletes: the first endorser was the tennis player Ilie Nastase, the first track endorser Steve Prefontaine, and the roster since has included Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix across field and track disciplines. Strength sport sits at the far end of that spectrum, invisible in advertising and unforgiving in use. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with the 80 year old runner Walt Stack, was aimed at effort rather than glamour, and a black and gold lifting shoe is one of the least glamorous, most effortful products the company sells.
Everything about a lifting shoe is the opposite of a cushioned sneaker. The heel is a solid, raised, non compressing wedge, because any foam under a heavy squat steals force and destabilises the lift. The upper is reinforced and strapped so the foot cannot move inside the shoe, and the outsole is flat with high grip so you stay welded to the platform. That is why these feel wrong walking to the gym and correct the instant you are under a bar. Nike's broader engineering habit of building specifically for one motion rather than adapting a general shoe runs from Bowerman's waffle iron sole through to ZoomX and the Vaporfly plate. This is the same instinct applied to standing still under load.
